PhosphorTech is presenting the latest results from its IDsorb/IDSpectra instrument at the 2022 International Pittsburgh Coal Conference (PCC). There are two presentations scheduled in Section 15b in the afternoon on Wednesday 9/21/2022 starting at 2:45 PM ET.
14:45 Spectroscopy-based Analysis of Fly Ash Interaction with Air-entraining Agents in Concrete
The device and method have been successfully used to rapidly analyze and classify the properties of various materials used in applications ranging from energy/catalysts to lighting, food quality, even biomedical products and research. The main application for coal technology is focused on the analysis and measurement of the chemical adsorption of fly ash and carbon-containing compounds for concrete applications.
The instrument and methodology are capable of quantitatively determining the air entraining agent (AEA) adsorbing properties of fly ash (FA) used in concrete admixtures. It uses an expandable spectral database of AEAs to determine the adsorption properties of fly ash. The database currently includes 15 different commercial AEAs thus enabling a rapid analysis of the adsorption properties of any fly ash used in concrete admixtures employing one of those AEAs. In addition, methylene blue (MB) has recently been added to the database. MB is a stable dye commonly used in many areas of research, including fly ash and carbon testing.
The IDS technology can provide a highly effective solution for the problems faced by the industry with regards to accurately determining the AEA dosage for concrete admixtures involving fly ash and AEAs. Additionally, IDS will enable a rapid and cost-effective method for better classification and categorization of large quantities of fly ash generated at various power plant facilities. This will in-turn minimize disposal issues and enable better utilization of fly ash as a by-product in various other industrial applications.
